Matchday 33

Valencia CF v Villarreal CF

Estadio de Mestalla
Valencia, Spain
Wednesday, 3 May 2023
Kick-off is at 19h30

Valencia CF will face off with Villarreal CF in a Spanish La Liga match at the Estadio de Mestalla on May 3.

Current Form

The Bats succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Cadiz CF away on April 30 as their two-match unbeaten run in the league was snapped.

Valencia defeated Real Valladolid in their last home game and their two-match winless run at the Estadio de Mestalla came to an end.

While Villarreal secured a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo at home on April 30 and they are undefeated in their last two games in La Liga.

The Yellow Submarine lost to Sevilla FC in their away game and the win ended their three-match unbeaten run on the road.

What Is At Stake

Valencia are embroiled in a battle to avoid relegation from La Liga and they are two points above the bottom three spots.

The Bats will further away from the relegation zone if they defeat Villarreal and the other results go their way.

On the other hand, Villarreal are placed fifth on the standings and a win over Valencia will see the Yellow Submarine boost their top four ambitions.

Team News

Valencia have no injury and suspension concerns, but Edinson Cavani, Dimitri Foulquier, José Gayà, Eray Cömert, Mouctar Diakhaby and Thierry Correia are all one yellow card away from suspension.

While Villarreal have no suspension worries, but Francis Coquelin and José Luis Morales are both injured.

Key Players

Samuel Lino, who has scored twice in his last three La Liga matches, could be the player to inspire Valencia to a win over Villareal.

Valencia manager Ruben Baraja will be wary of Villarreal's top scorer Jose Luis Morales who has found the back of the net seven times in the league in the current campaign.

Quotes

"We came here for the three points, which gave us a lot of peace of mind," Valencia star Toni Lato said after their loss to Cadiz.

"We made mistakes that we knew we couldn't afford to make in this type of match, in this type of 'final' in which both teams have a lot at stake.

"That is what killed us, because in the end you are going against the current. When we start to play and are ourselves, we can restrain teams, have chances and start to get into the game," he added.

"We cannot start like we did, and the second half was the same. It's a shame because we could have taken a very, very big step forward."

Head-to-Head

Villarreal secured a 2-1 win over Valencia in their last meeting in La Liga and the game took place at the Estadi de la Ceràmica on 31 December 2022.

Therefore, Yellow Submarine are undefeated in their two league games against Bats having recorded two consecutive wins.
